I have researched how to use a Green Screen in Final Cut Pro X by looking at different youtube videos. On these clips they use a green screen to change their backgrounds on a bigger scale to emphasise a professional setting. Movies and videos use green screen as it is much cheaper to change the backgrounds than travelling to different locations. The video shows that Green screen is quite simple to use. You can change the effect by dragging it to the footage which will get rid of the green background. There are many things on Final Cut Pro X which can make the footage look professional. You can crop the video in order to get rid of any unwanted lighting, this will help the video look more professional. In order to create a professional background it is important to make sure the green screen doesn't have any creases in it otherwise it wouldn't work properly. Looking at this clip will be able to help me for when I'm editing my own music video, as I will know exactly how to use green screen sufficiently and how to edit a background onto it.
Slow Motion
I have researched slow motion and how it is used to dramatise the scene. I have researched how you can do this in Final Cut Pro X. Looking at these clips have showed me that you must pick a good spot in order for the slow motion to work properly. You also have to cut the snippet of the clip where the slow motion will start and stop for it to work. You can go to the clip and right click and go down to retime and stretch the clip out for example 50%, this then means your clip is slowed down and conformed. I have learnt that when you create a slow motion it slows down the audio as well as the video, to prevent this from happening you must right click on the clip you have edited and click on 'detach audio' for it to not apply to the slowed down audio. You can also go on the same drop list and change the quality of your video to make it look more professional. This clip will help me to edit my music video If i decide to use slow motion and has taught me how to do something that I didn't know before.
Backgrounds
I researched backgrounds on YouTube. You can change it by going on Final Cut Pro X and going on generators and changing the background. This gives the music video a interesting effect and may fit with the genre you are doing.
The typical target audience for pop is 12 - 25 year olds which made up of females and some males. Pop is one of the main genres which is portrayed over the internet, music channels and advertisements.
Name: Chloe
Age: 14
Occupation: School Student
Hobbies: Going to concerts, listening to music and watching music videos, hanging out with her friends, shopping, dancing round her room and at her dance class.
Chloe meets the typical codes and conventions of a pop fan as she is wearing the merchandise for One Direction, she is really happy and she is a female teenager which is a stereotypical age and gender for a pop fan.
R&B Fan
The majority of R&B fans are teenagers/young adults roughly between the ages of 13-25. This could be because of the explicit lyrics in some of the songs, a majority of this age group are also females. Females are attracted to R&B music because female R&B artists stereotypically make songs about being in love or heartbroken or because the male R&B artists will usually go topless in their music videos which attracts female attention.
Name: Anton Age: 19 Occupation: Dancer Hobbies: Dancing for large audiences, going out with friends, driving, going to the cinema, eating nandos and choreographing to his favourite music.
Anton meets the typical codes and conventions of an R&B fan as he is good looking, seems happy and dances which will attract female attention like R&B artists do.
Country Fan
The majority of country fans are males but females do enjoy country too. The typical age range for country fans is 18 - 50. As most of the fans are older, there are young country fans too who are fans of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus whilst she was featuring in Hannah Montana.
Name: Billy-Jo Age: 44 Occupation: Farmer Hobbies: Caring for animals, socialising with friends and playing the guitar.
Billy-Jo meets the typical codes and conventions of a country fan as he is a farmer who enjoys playing the guitar. He also wears clothes which stereotypically a country fan or artist would wear such as a shirt or a cowboy hat.
Rap Fan
The majority of the rap audience is made up of males between the ages of 14 - 30. Rap fans usually dress casually and wear big statement jewellery pieces.
Name: Ashen Age: 19 Occupation: Football student Hobbies: Playing football with friends, socialising with friends and going out clubbing.
Ashen meets the typical codes and conventions of a rap fan as he is a footballer who is wearing casual clothing. Although he doesn't have any statement jewellery on in his image, I could imagine him suiting it if he was wearing it.
Rock Fan
There is a equal split divide between females and males who are ages of 14 - 40 and they are the audience of rock music. They stereotypically will dye their hair black or a unique unusual colour which they wouldn't naturally have. They also have piercings and wear a lot of leather.
Pierce meets the typical codes and conventions of a rock fan as he is dressed in leather, has bleach blonde hair which he probably wasn't born with and wears a bandana. He also is doing a hand gesture which is associated with rock. He also is a drummer which rock fans stereotypically do in their spare time.
I have created an online survey with several questions about music consumption. I sent it out to my family, a range of the teaching staff at my school and some of my teachers forwarded it on to their lower year classes. This allowed me to get responses from different genders in different age ranges.
The questions that I have used are:
The responses that I got were:
The most popular age range that answered my survey was between the ages 16-18 and the majority of the sample were females which is gender biased but I think that stereotypically, females are most likely going to watch music videos rather than males who are more likely to listen to the music rather than watch the video. The majority of my sample only watch music videos 0-3 times a week which isn't a lot considering how many music videos dominate the charts. Youtube is the biggest source for music videos in my sample but most of them would prefer to watch TV music channels if Youtube didn't exist which suggests that they would rather watch them for free rather than pay for a video on iTunes. The most watched genre from my sample is pop followed by 'other' and the majority of my sample believe that pop is the most shown genre. The elements of making a music video successful are very close in popularity as the most important elements to my sample are choreography and storyline.
One Direction One direction are a brand themselves as their logo is 1D. This logo is official merchandise for One Direction, it is spread across the world so that everyone can access it online, where there is an option to change the currency from pound to euro to dollar. They have lots of merchandise, accessories and gifts. They use social media like Twitter and Facebook to interact with fans. Social media allows them to see live responses from fans. Fans post their questions, love, gratitude and anything on their Facebook Fan Page or Twitter. Each band member has their own Twitter handle and can connect with fans immediately, although not all fans can get noticed since they each have over 2 million followers!
They also have a website to post information, sell products like T-shirts, hoodies, posters, bracelets. The website is in several different languages. Fans are given a choice to choose their country. For example, if you are from New Zealand, you can click on NZ to find out the latest news about One Direction in New Zealand. The website is the same worldwide but the local news are different.
YouTube lets the group and their manager know what is happening out there. For example, ticket sales for 1D’s UK and Ireland Arena Tour in 2013 were on sale just this past Saturday. This was seen on an articlewith a YouTube video where some fans were queuing and camping outside the ticket sales counter. The group gets to see what is happening. This may boost their confidence. Managers and sales agents can boost more sales by organising more concerts in the area knowing there are people who will go all out for the tickets. One Direction have their own nail polish, tooth brush, hat, necklace, bags, tops, phone-case, shorts, badges, jumpers, duvet cover, dolls, makeup, perfume and much more. Merchandise with their logo on it promotes One Direction.
Beyonce Beyonce has lots of merchandise items, which include of jumpers, perfume, sunglasses, pillows, mugs, body lotion, posters and much more. Beyonce signed a contract with Pepsi. The company embarked on a hybrid project with Beyonce that include standard advertising like commercials as well as a multimillion-dollar fund to support the singer's creative projects. Over the last decade many consumer brands have been taking more active roles with artists, particularly in pop music. Converse, Red Bull and Toyota’s Scion line, for example, have become as familiar in the music business as any label or concert promoter by paying to help create and promulgate music. Beyonce has built a global brand around being one of the biggest names in pop and she works hard to keep it that way. With 17 Grammy awards, $75 million in world record sales and a fourth world tour underway, Beyonce is one of the world's biggest names in show business.
The Box Television Channel came to the United Kingdom and Ireland after being seen in Miami in 1991 by Vincent Monsey and Liz Laskowski.
The target audience of The Box is teenagers to young adults because it features very mainstream music with young artists. The Box mostly attracts females but males do watch the channel too. They feature different programmes such as Hottest Males and Hottest Females which attracts different audiences due to different artist interests. The demographic audience is E and D because the audience are mostly students or newly employed people. The artists that get more air time on the show are the ones who have a No1 Single or a Single which is in the top 40. Sometimes artists get more air times if they have several songs in the charts. For example, Ed Sheeran gets a lot of air time at this current time because he has three songs 'Thinking Out Loud', 'Sing' and 'Don't'. This is beneficial for Ed Sheeran because he is getting more recognition from the audiences and attracts a younger audience which is always beneficial for artists and bands because the younger generations are the future.
The main genres to be shown are Pop, R&B and sometimes Indie.
Kiss TV was launched 26th June 1998.
The audience for Kiss TV ranges from teenagers to young adults as it has channels that play music from the 90s and the noughties which attract attention from adults in their 30s and 40s however music of the music played is UK top 40 or Best of 2014 which directs the young audiences to watch Kiss TV.
Similar to The Box Television, some artists will get more air time than others due to the chart hits at the time.
Programmes that they broadcast are Weekend Anthems, Ultimate RnB and Hip Hop, Late Night Jamz, Kissalicious. These programmes give a lot of big urban songs and videos. This attracts a young audience because it is a lot of exciting, up to date music.
4 Music is a UK television programme which started broadcasting on the 15th August 2008.
Programmes that they air range from Todays 4Music Top 10, 4Music Big Ones, UKTop40, The Versus Chart and 4Music Doubles. These programmes feature pop and urban music along with songs from the 90s and noughties which compares different artists and their music videos.
The audience is teenagers to young adults because of the music choice that is given. Demographically, the audience is E and D.
The genres that are usually shown are pop with possibilities of RnB songs getting into the charts.
Like Box Television and Kiss TV, some artists may get more airtime due to the benefit of having two or more songs in the chart. For Example, One Direction have 'steal my girl' and 'night changes' in the chart at the time which creates more recognition for them and also helps 4Music to get more viewers due to the amount of fans that One Direction and other artists have.

I have analysed Madonna's music videos since 1892 from her first shot video to one of her most recent videos in 2012. I decided to use Madonna as she is a pop artist which is the genre that I think I will focus on Pop for my music video.
Narrative style: The narrative of Enrique's video 'Hero' is that it is an example of Propp's Theory and Levi Strauss' narrative. This is because Propp's theory is that narratives are motivated by a variety of character functions, there are a hero, a villain, donor, dispatcher, the false hero, the helper, the princess and her father. Levi Strauss' narrative theory is that there is binary opposites. This means that there will be one side which is supported because they are the 'right side'. For example, In 'Hero' Enrique Iglesias is the hero who is sent on a quest to overcome the evil thugs which are villains with the aid of Jennifer Love Hewitt who is the helper and she also becomes the reward so she is seen as the princess of the narrative.
Representation of gender, ethnicity, class and age: Enrique is a Spanish male who was 26 at the time of Hero's release. In Hero, he portrays a romantic man who would do anything for the girl that he wants. Typically, the majority of men who are 26 either want to settle down or have fun and it is clear that in this music video, Enrique is one of the 26 year olds that want to settle down. In addition to this, stereotypically Spanish men are flirtatious with woman and are more determined to get woman than English men are. In this video, Enrique appears to be a middle class man as he has a nice convertible car which are usually seen to be expensive, nice clothes and there is a cut of where money is carelessly flying out of a bag and then a second cut when he has set money alight. This could suggest that he is wealthy enough not to care about money or that he would choose love over money which isn't a typical representation of 26 year old men. Jennifer is a stereotypical woman as woman typically love the attention of men and she appears to be enjoying it because she isn't pushing him away.
Editing: The music video doesn't match the typical codes and conventions of a music video as it doesn't use continuity editing. The pace of the video is slow to go in time with the song's tune. The editing transition used is fading. In addition to this, there is a lot of quick cuts used. This decreases the realism of the music video as it doesn't seem like a natural scenario as there is a lot of fading and changing between cuts.
Cinematography:Shot type: The video starts with a high angle wide shot, this allows the audience to see the area and any type of sudden special relationships. It also allows the audience to identify the genre conventions through the iconography, costumes etc in the shot.
Camera angles: From 0:04-0:06 there is an extreme close up of Enrique and Jennifer's faces. An extreme close up is used to express their emotions or look into closer detail. Between 0:07-0:16 there is a series of fading shots which range from close ups, wide shots, long shots and medium long shot. The use of a medium long shot and a long shot is so that the audience can see the character as well as the surrounding. From 0:17 to 0:18 there is a close up which fades into a medium shot(0:18-0:20). At 0:21 there is a low angle shot which cuts into a medium shot. The use of a low angle shot is to establish the power over the audience. From 0:24-0:26 there is a close up which then fades into a extreme close up. Throughout the first part of the music video, the same camera angles are continuously used. At 3:55 there is the use of a long shot to express the relationship between Enrique and Jennifer and then goes into a high angle close up to emphasise the breaking emotions.
Camera Movements: At 0:00-0:03, there is a crane shot which allows the camera to be recording from the air which creates a high angle wide shot. At 1:03, there is a cut into a tracking shot which zooms into a long shot of Enrique and Jennifer. At 1:28 there is a zoom into the back of the villain's head. At 1:34, it appears that the camera is hand-held as the movement is uneven and creates a sense of realism. After that, it goes into a zoom in camera movement.
Framing: Throughout the video, Enrique, Jennifer and the villain all have their eyes on the same level as the audience to engage them to watch the video all the way through and makes them feel as if they are part of the action, eyeline shots may also be used in this video to create a sense that the audience should relate to the point of view of a specific character. At 0:00-0:03, the framing used is cadre fenetre which emphasises the deserted area that they are in throughout the duration of the video. At 1:56, Enrique and Jennifer are framed from a low angle to emphasise the power of their relationship and how it can't be broken by anyone.
Focus: In Hero, the majority of the music video is in deep focus, this suggests that the director and film crew wanted all of the surrounding and emotions to be portrayed through the motion as well as the lyrics. However, there are moments when there are different focuses. At 1:30, there is usage of shallow focus, this is where the villains face is in focus and the surrounding of where he is standing isn't in focus. At 1:55, there is a second usage of a shallow focus because Jennifer's face is in focus and Enrique is behind her out of focus, this could suggest that Jennifer could blur Enrique out of her life if she needed to considering he may not defeat the villain. At 2:14 and 2:22 there is a blurred focus when the whole cut is out of focus.
Music: Hero is a harmonious song as the notes of the chords all sound nice together and don't clash. The majority of hero is adagio because it is slow and graceful which is contrasted with the chorus when the music changes to be allegro as it is fast, this links to the music video as everything is going slow between Enrique and Jennifer which then transitions to a strong romance scene of them. The genre of Hero is Latin Pop. Latin Pop is pop music that has been percieved to have a Latin influence, generally Spain, Italy, France, Portugal or Romania. Latin Pop is usually sung in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian or other languages, however English is also a language choice for the song to be sung in. Like Hero, it is percieved to have a Spanish influence but Enrique sings in English. The timbre of Hero is quite distorted as one moment Enrique is singing clearly and softly and then another moment when the chorus comes around, there is the use of a crescendo where the music gets louder and more powerful. The leit motif of Hero is accomplishing to gain love, this is illustrated by Enrique trying to be the heroic figure to end up with Jennifer, his princess. I think that Hero is a minor song as the music sounds sad however, the chorus is a major as it is uplifting and Enrique seems confident about his and Jennifer's romance. Mise en Scene:Setting: The setting of the music video for Hero is set in a desert which could foreshadow the isolation and the loneliness that is to come which could depict what is going to happen at the end of the video. There is the usage of a stone building which comes across every time that the chorus comes around. Stone buildings were what the majority of buildings used to be due to the old equipment used to carry out building work, this suggests that the desert that they're in hasn't been visited in a while which may be why they're battling a villain there so that no one can catch them. At the end of the video, they are surrounded by police cars down a town road to suggest that they are at the end of their adventure fighting against the villain. There is the use of rain which emphasises the pathetic fallacy as Enrique is hurt and looks like he is in danger of losing Jennifer. Props: At 0:32, Enrique is holding a necklace which is reoccurring throughout the video as it is being worn and then Jennifer holds it at 4:10. This is the only prop used as everything else in the video is stationary from the setting. The necklace is a complete square with a miniature flower in the centre. This suggests that their love is complete and delicate but the use of a metal flower suggests that love is delicate but theirs cannot be broken. However, it is taken off at the end to suggest that the love has been defeated by the villain. There is also the use of money to suggest that they have enough money to keep their love alive. Jennifer also is eating a lollypop which highlights that she is aiming to be seductive to Enrique. Costume: At 0:14, Enrique is wearing sunglasses and a wooly hat, this contrasts two seasons in one style. This may link to the song of Hero because he is expressing to Jennifer how he can be her hero every day of their life which will include every season. At 0:22, Enrique has a tank top on which is grey and light blue jeans with a brown belt. Men usually wear tank tops to show of their arms and to try and attract woman to their upper body. Jeans are typically worn for casual wear which suggests that Enrique is fully comfortable with his and Jennifer's relationship. The use of wearing a belt emphasises that he is down to business to get his reward of having his princess as authority figures such as police wear belts and Enrique appears to have the self belief that he has the authority to overcome the villain to win over Jennifer. In the background of the cut, Jennifer is wearing a white crop top. This emphasises that she is feeling promiscuous and has the self confidence to flaunt her figure. The denotation of white is that she is honest and loyal to Enrique. She is also wearing a jean mini skirt. This links in with the white crop top as mini skirts are seen to be seductive clothing items however the use of jean is that she is also comfortable in the relationship with Enrique. Her style of clothing makes her look provocative in a sexual manner to Enrique. At 0:48, Enrique is in a shirt and Jennifer is in a black crop top and jeans. This suggests that they have smartened up and are getting down to business to beat the villain. The villain is shown in a suit jacket which suggests that he is serious and won't mess around with his work. At 2:04, Jennifer is wearing a white top with navy mini shorts and Enrique is wearing jean shorts and a navy t-shirt. Their choice of clothing suggests that they are in a casual, comfortable relationship as they don't have to dress up all the time when they are together. At 2:56, Enrique changes into a suit and Jennifer is in a white dress. This illustrates that they are at a ceremony as they both look smart and sophisticated. This could suggest that they have conquered love and are celebrating. Make-up and hair: Throughout the whole music video of Hero, Jennifer's makeup isn't overpowering as it is very minimal, natural and sophisticated. This could highlight that Enrique loves her for her natural beauty and not the makeup that she wears. Jennifer's hair also stays the same throughout the video as it is long, curly and flowing. Long curly hair suggests that she is very feminine. Enrique's hair is covered by a hat for the majority of the time but at the end is it is ruffled to suggest that he has had a bumpy ride to get his princess and that the villain has been working his hard.
Body Language and Facial Expression: At 0:04, Jennifer and Enrique both have their heads down which emphasises negativity, this links to the music video as it foreshadows the end where Enrique is hurt and struggles to put his head up. At 0:19, Jennifer has her head up which suggests that she is optimistic for a positive outcome and that she'll end up with Enrique. At 0:23, she walks past him slowly with good posture which highlights her happiness and he has his head down a few seconds later which emphasises his doubts of their relationship which is contrasted by the use of his arms being open which suggests that he does have some form of a positive attitude toward his relationship. Throughout the video, Jennifer is smiling whereas Enrique has a nervous face. This illustrates how Enrique is doubting his strength that he has to overcome the villain whereas Jennifer has the faith in him to beat the villain and be her hero. At 3:05, Jennifer runs over to the villain quickly and has her lower and upper set of teeth grinding together, this makes her look animalistic like a tiger which suggests that she is fierce and is determined to help Enrique overcome the villain.
Blocking and Composition: Throughout the video, Enrique and Jennifer are on the same level and are constantly in each others personal space. This emphasises their relationship and how they are in love and don't mind getting into each others space. However, when the villain gets into their way, they both try to fight him out of their space. This suggests that they have a strong hate towards him and don't want to be involved with him. At some points in the video, Enrique and Jennifer will rotate between them, they are either in the foreground or background of each other when they are in the same cut which suggests that they both have hidden emotions that they don't want to get in the way of their relationship so that they can try and make it work.
Lighting: From 0:00-0:16, there is low key lighting which foreshadows that the end is going to be negative and upsetting. From 0:17-1:08, there is high key lighting which suggests that they are happy to be together. This is stopped at 1:09 when the lighting suddenly drops to low key where the villain is first shown in the music video. For the rest of the music video, the lighting is continuously low key other than a few short snippet cuts where it changes to high key for a second at a time. This suggests that the villain ruined their relationship as soon as he came into their lives. At 2:44, the shadow of the villain changes dramatically to emphasise the waiting time of waiting for Enrique and Jennifer. It also highlights that the villain is lonely which could be the reason to why he is trying to split up Enrique and Jennifer.
R'n'B/Pop Artist - Bruno Mars
Song Choice - Grenade
Narrative Style:'Grenade' narrates the love story through biblical references. Bruno Mars is known to be a very strong Christian and this is displayed this through the music video of Grenade. Bruno Mars is seen to be a he hero in Propp's theory as he is seeking to get something, however he ends up a coward as he ends his life which goes against Propp's theory as it doesn't include a cowardice figure. Representation of gender, ethnicity, class and age: Bruno was a 25 year old man in 2010 when the song was bought out. Bruno Mars was born in Hawaii and his mother is from the Philippines. I have researched into the age that people get married in Hawaii and in the Philippines, in Hawaii the legal age to get married without parent's consent is 18 but most people get married in their 20s which suggests that Bruno is determined to settle down as he may feel that he is behind in life compared to other people in his area. However, this is contrasted with the tradition of marriage in Philippines which he may be influenced to follow the tradition due to his mother. The legal age in Philippines is 18 but those who are between 18 and 21 must get written parents consent and those who are 22 to 24 must prove that they have received parental advice. This highlights that considering he is 25 it means that he feels that he is ready to get married without having his parent's advice. Bruno Mars is doesn't meet a typical stereotype of males and is taking on a feminine role as he is chasing his love whereas it usually the female that is trying to get the boy that she likes. It is clear that Bruno Mars is a middle class male who is wearing orange which is the typical colour of convict's clothes however this is contrasted with him looking like a wealthy upper class male, I can see this through his clothing as he is wearing a suit and tie which is typical attire for men with well paid jobs. Editing:At 0:05 there is the use of the fading transition from the rain onto Bruno's close up. There are a lot of quick cuts between different camera angles which fit in with the rhythm of the music. Cinematography:Shot type: The video starts off with a close up to emphasise how Bruno Mars wants the audience to know how he is feeling so that they can venture with him through his journey of overcoming his guilt and trying to please his love by stating how he would do anything for her. Camera angles: From 0:00 - 0:09, there is a close up shot which is used to emphasise his emotions as soon as he is entered into the cut as you can see him closely and clearly which makes the audience feel as if they are with him listening to him pour out his heart. Throughout the music video, there are several cuts using a long shot which highlights his courage to pull along the piano and his determination to get to his end. It is also a good camera angle to use as it allows the audience to see how much strain is being put on his body. At 2:21 a low angle shot is used to show the power between emotions that Bruno is feeling compared to the happy emotions that his love interest has with her new man. This is contrasted by a high angle shot at 2:33 when the woman looks back down on Bruno walking away to show that she is his past and she isn't stopping him from going. Camera Movements: Throughout the music video, there is the use of a follow camera movement which follows Bruno Mars as he treks through the streets with a piano, there is also minor use of zooming in and out as he is struggling to pull the piano. At 0:50, there is the use of a dolly shot to emphasise his ignorance when it comes to ignoring a homeless man as he is putting himself first. Framing: From 0:00 to 0:13, Bruno is always on eye level with the audience to suggest that he believes that everybody has those days where they feel down and that he can relate to the audience and they can relate to him. At 0:34, Bruno Mars is on the same level as the 'thugs' which proves that they aren't any better than him. The framing at 2:19 shows that he feels that he is lower than the woman that he is in love with as she is higher up than him smiling and he is on the ground looking distraught. Focus: The majority of the music video for Grenade uses deep focus, this illustrates that the director and film crew wanted all of the surrounding and emotions to be portrayed through the motion as well as the lyrics. However, there are cuts when there are different focuses used. At 0:05, there is blurred images as everything is out of focus which suggests that Bruno Mars doesn't know what emotions to feel as they are all over the place. Music: The timbre of grenade is rich and clear to emphasise his emotions across to the audience. Grenade is a harmonious song which is pleasant for the audience to hear and listen to because all the notes work well together. The notes are very minor to represent the meaning of the music video as he is expressing his emotional feelings. It is an allegro song to represent the constantly changing emotions that Bruno Mars is dealing with inside his clustered head. Although it is very harmonious, there is also use of drums which makes Grenade forte, this represents that even though he tries to remain calm, he can't because he's too heartbroken to get on with his every day life. Mise en Scene:Setting: The setting of Grenade starts of with a bedroom which is dark to capture the depressing emotions flowing through Bruno Mars head. He is safe at home which suggests that he is feeling secure as he is in his own space. However, he leaves the house and the setting for the majority of the music video is a town which appears to be very central yet rough as there is groups of aggressive men and homeless people living on the streets. There is also people driving past in cars ignoring the fact that there is a small man pulling along a heavy piano which suggests that he is in a very ignorant society. Props: Throughout the music video for Grenade, there is a reoccurring prop being used which is a heavy wooden piano. Bruno Mars is seen to be pulling the piano along by rope down streets and up hills. The use of the heavy piano represents the burden that he has to live with and is always weighing down, in this case it appears to be losing his love interest for another man yet he'd still die for her. The use of the piano being wooden is because it is easier to break into pieces if it is triggered to which represents Bruno Mars weakness and foreshadows his suicidial death. The use of a rope indicates that he is bound to get rope burn and is hurting continuously hurting himself as he pulls along the heavy piano which links to the lyrics of the song in the sense that he would take any pain for her. At 2:53, there is a ride sign with two arrows pointing either side of the road with graffiti reading "hel", this could be interpreted as Bruno is going to go to hell no matter what direction he takes on his venture with the piano. Costumes: Bruno Mars attire in Grenade is very stylish from 0:34 till the end of the music video as he is in his suit and tie. He is wearing the type of outfit that you'd see a man wearing to a wedding or a funeral which suggests that he is very hopeful to get his love interest back or that he is predicting the end of the music video. The suit and tie are both black which is the stereotypical funeral colour which foreshadows his suicidal death. Other than the suit, at the beginning of the video he is wearing an orange t-shirt which is the typical clothing for a new convict in prison. This suggests that he isn't as nice as he seems and he may be the reason for losing the girl that he is in love with.
Make-up and hair: Bruno Mars hasn't got any extreme makeup on, it is very neutral and doesn't make any of his flaws standout which suggests he cares about how his love interest sees him. Through out the video, his hair is gelled very neatly to emphasise how much he cares about his appearance which is stereotypical of men who are trying to impress people that they are attracted to.
Body Language and Facial Expression: Throughout the video, Bruno Mars is hunched over due to pulling a piano this suggests that he is weak and can't cope with his burden. His facial expression doesn't change in the video which highlights how sad he truly is and nothing can really help him stop the depression.
Blocking and Composition: Throughout the video nothing blocks Bruno Mars as it represents his loneliness. The only time that he is blocked is when the cars go past him and stop him from getting the spotlight in the music video. The use of the cars blocking him shows how more stable they are as they can get past him and he is weaker than them. When his love and her new man are together, the man is blocking her to suggest that he is in the way of hers and Bruno's relationship.
Lighting: From 0:00 to 0:04, there is low key lighting which is portraying the heavy downpour of rain, the use of a substantial amount of rain is to foreshadow that something sad is soon to come by the use of pathetic fallacy. Throughout the video the lighting is continuously low key apart from when the woman that he would catch a grenade for is kissing another man which suggests that she is happy with her new life and believes she is better off without Bruno Mars. At 3:21, there is the use of the red level crossing lights flashing, the denotation of red is danger and level crossing lights are used to display the warning that the road shouldn't be used due to an oncoming train, this foreshadows that the end is arriving and it links back to the pathetic fallacy of the rain which foreshadowed a tough ending.
Indie group: Bastille Song Choice - Flaws
Narrative style: The narrative is two different people having flaws but when they are together they make up for each others flaws.
Representation of gender, ethnicity, class and age:The main actor in the music video is not stereotypically how a male would act or dress, but does fit with the genre of indie rock. The females in the clip are going against stereotypes as they have face paints on which represent death and their costume goes with the indie genre. Editing: The clip involves quick cuts. This gives the audience a quick view of the different things involved in the scene. For example, at the beginning of the clip it shows the mans shoes, hands and clips of the scene. This makes the clip flow well in an orderly manner.
Cinematography:Shot type: The video starts with a wide long shot of the crime scene. This depicts whats happened in the music video and suggests that its a big crime scene.
Camera angles: At 0:03-0:04 there is a high angle close up shot of the side of Dans face which demonstrates loneliness because he hasn't got anyone else next to him. It then moves onto close up shots of his hands and shoes this shows personal identity. At 0:11 there is a wide shot of the crime scene which is at the sea front and police officers, this suggests that the man has been murdered and its a serious matter and its being dealt carefully under the circumstances. At 0:15, Dan then gets up slowly from the sand to show that his soul is alive which goes along with the lyrics but his body is dead. At 0:22, there is a point of view shot of the girls hair, this is also flowing with the lyrics explaining that their flaws go along with one another. At 0:36, there is a wide shot of the girls with scary face makeup on the back of a white car and shows them lifting the boot down to show more inside. This is where Dan is saying there is a whole in his soul and he can't feel it. At 0:53- 1:05 it has a wide shot of the girls and one of them jumping as he says 'you have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve, I have always buried them deep beneath the ground' this suggests that they are important to him and their relationship as they are within him and will still be with him when he's dead. At 1:17-1:23 there is a wide shot of the girls around the table with the man, this shows that they each are together and each of them have flaws within themselves. At 1:58, there is a long distance shot of the water ride this gives a view of the scene which is interesting. The music video is in focus and clear throughout the video.
Music:The timbre of the music is rich and clear this is so that the audience can hear the singer properly and he repeats 'flaws' clearly as thats the main thing he is singing about and he expresses it throughout. The genre of Flaws is Synthpop and Folk. Synthpop is a genre of popular music that first became prominent in the 1980s, which features the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument. Mise en Scene: Setting:The setting of flaws is a crime scene on the beach from 0:00-0:22 this depicts the death was in a public place, although there was no-one at the scene. It also may be set at the beach as it might of been were him and his girlfriend used to hang out as its a fun place to be when spending time with eachother. At 0:34 the face painted girls are at the back of the theme park this shows the environment in more detail. Props: At the start of the music video the police men are holding a notepad and pen to write notes on the crime scene and whats involved. This gives the scene a more realistic view as this is what would usually happen. There are also lights and 'crime scene do not cross' yellow banners, this gives evidence not to cross as its being treated. At 2:13, Dan is playing bumper cars at the theme park, this flows well with the music as it keeps to the motion of the car. He is playing against the dead bodies which could mean they are playing to see their flaws. Costume: Throughout the music video Dan is wearing a dark green jacket, white t-shirt, black jeans, watch and red converse. These show he's up to date with the trends and they are casual clothes that you would wear to the beach. At 0:12 the policemen are wearing the official policewear with a crime scene jacket and policeman hat. They have also got white plastic gloves on which helps to make the scene realistic. The girls are wearing skeleton tops, gloves, black trousers and leather jackets this identifies them as being dead bodies. Make-up and hair:The girls have skeleton face paint on which is representing death. Body Language and Facial Expressions: At the beggining of the music video, Dan is spread out lying on the ground with his eyes closed, this gives the idea that he is dead. At 0:35, the girls have fierce looks on their face as they are dancing. At 0:41 Dan has a passionate face whilst he is singing, this signifies that he is emotional. At 1:21 the girls and Dan are in a cafe laughing together, this shows that they are having a good time. Blocking and Composition: The girls are dancing in the foreground and there are people in the background further away, this shows that the camera is focused on the dancers only. Lighting: The lighting is high key, this is used to create a joyful atmosphere It is then natural lighting because its dark.
